Need to talk privately with Cilan? Send him a message via the crystal or carrier pigeon? Want to meet with him without posting a log for it? Here's the place to do it!
I got lucky with this gift. [ well ] ...if he likes it, that is. To be honest, I don't really know a lot about him, or most of the people I want to get gifts for.
[ And he's hoping to maybe get some ideas about Cilan during this outing!! Slip him into a store, ask a few innocent questions... ]
I used to have the same trouble with the guy I lived next door to for the whole of my life too. It's just hard!
Mm, I agree. It can be a difficult taste prone to indecisiveness when looking for something to give as a gift for someone during special occasions like these. Even I can't say that I know for sure what would be considered a gift with the perfect flavor for some of the people I want to give presents to here...
[...But, he soon turns and flashes Red a bright, glowing smile.]
But, what I am sure of is that it's the thought that counts in the end. And the thought that there are people out there that care enough about you that they want to give you a gift to show their appreciation of the bond they have with you... that's a sweet enough taste as it is, isn't it?
So, this gift that you've picked out for Silver... no matter what it is, I'm sure that it will make him very happy.
[ Wow, Cilan; if the smile wasn't going to make Red feel rosy, those words sure enough do it. He has to look away, hand patting at the hat he's wearing to cover his head. This guy always has a way with words, doesn't he. ]
Right, [ he says, looking back at him, giving him a more smaller but just as sincere smile, ] and you shouldn't worry about what you get him either. I'm sure he'll love it whatever it is!
[ And, boosting that smile up just a smidgen: ] Especially when your food's included!
[ Because who doesn't love food? Who. But just at that moment, or just a few steps more, Red head turns to the sight of a building, a sound coming out as he looks back between it and Cilan and hurries to the door, hand motioning for him to follow him. ] In here, here we go.
[ Frames and paintings are displayed in the open window, and there's a chattering of a bell as Red opens the door, holding it for Cilan to come into a space that isn't much warmer than the outside, but cosy enough in comparison. It's a spacious area, and its decoration is of the craft it sells: frames, frames frames. All of different sizes and colours, and paintings of different styles dotted around.
Cilan can take a look around if he wants, but Red's going for the counter, telling his name to the individual on the other side and that he's here to pick up a picture that someone did, 'and they picked a frame for it too?' ]
[So yeah, Cilan's gonna check out some of these paintings over here in the corner while Red's taking care of what he needs. He seems to be particularly fond of looking at some of the sample paintings of plants and flowers, and... oh, this is a nice scenery painted over on this one. Some of the slightly more abstract art is interesting to look at too. Maybe he should get something from here too, but for who?
He'll have to think about it a little more, but otherwise he'll walk over here closer to where Red is. What kind of picture is he getting?]
[ Ah, good timing Cilan, Red was about to wave you over. ]
What do you think?
[ The worker's brought out the picture already inside the framing, left uncoloured to leave the woodwork as decoration. As for the picture, one is of a face Cilan knows well standing in the middle, Silver himself, and of two other individuals that might not be familiar, but the picture itself speaks of the relationship of them to Silver (or what it's meant to be), smiles and grins, friendly and warm.
(Not exactly like this, but with similar enough expressions on Crys and Gold) ]
That's Crys, [ Red points to the girl, then goes over to the boy ] and this one's Gold. They're his best friends from back home. Silver told me about them some time ago, and I got him to show me their faces while I held a memory petal. [ He gives a sneaky glance Cilan's way, said a little hushed there towards the end. Hopefully, Silver didn't know what was going on at all. ]
The painter's the store owner's niece, and she did the poses and everything for it! I've never bought a painting before, but isn't it great? How about the frame? Does it look okay?
[Oh, wow... Cilan's quiet for a moment, simply looking it over before he speaks.]
So these are Silver's friends back home... [They've talked about their respective lives back home once or twice before, but... usually they were about some of the troubles that they had faced or were waiting for them there. Silver hasn't really told Cilan much about the positives, like these two people depicted here with him... still, the picture gets a smile from Cilan.]
It's beautiful... not just because of the technique and the colors used, but the painter really is quite talented, being able to depict such a heart-warming friendship like this.
[And then he turns to Red, sparkling a bit more now.]
This is perfect. I can say with certainty that you have good taste when it comes to putting together special gifts for your friends.
[ Red hadn't much of an opinion of art, but for this he nods in total agreement to Cilan's initial judgments, glowing a little softly himself as he looks back to the picture. But it's that same lingering gaze that dies it back down, makes his lips twitch briefly.
But he still feels happy with the decision regardless. He gives a few more quick words to the one behind the counter ('I'll take it like that, thanks') and they begin to wrap it up in brown paper and string, as Red turns his head to Cilan, though eyes flickering between the wooden surface and the other boy. ]
I don't know about that... but I think about the people I can't see too, and sure, we have a memories, and the petals can help remember better than you can, but...
[ He trails, knowing what he was going to say. But... ]
[ A pair of eyes flick onto him in amusement for that, but Red doesn't catch it in the slightest, turning to face Cilan and his hands curled up into fists. ]
Let me get one of your brothers! I know it's not going to be a surprise, but who cares? [ A side-look to the shopowner. ] Is Anna still taking orders?
[ Always eager for them. The small exchange doesn't kill the excitement in Red's face in the slightest when he returns to the older boy. ]
My brothers? [Oh... Cilan's quiet for a moment, clearly not having expected that kind of offer.]
That may not be much of a surprise as far as gifts go, but... [There's a pause, before he smiles, though it seems a little sad.] I do think it would be nice, having a picture of them here. There is something to remember my friends by, but I don't actually have anything of my brothers here, so...
[Yeah, alright, let's do that.]
Do you suppose we should stop by the tree to try to collect a memory petal of them as a reference, or would it be alright to just show an image of them with the crystal?
The petals are easier since she can keep it there with her, and then you can take the petal back afterwards! [ Well, for as long as they last. ] Alright, let's go do it now-!
[ Except he's about to turn without even picking up the picture there on the counter, but fortunately his own head reminds him of that and paying for the frame, spinning right back round to give sorrys and to dig in for the sylvs he has ready. He should be embarrassed, but he doesn't feel an ounce of it right now, taking the parcel in his hands.
[Off we go to the tree, then! It's been a while since Cilan actually came here to purposefully seek out any memory petals, but once they arrive, he seems to be a man on a mission.]
Okay, I'm going to show you a memory that has the perfect flavor when it comes to depicting the bond between my brothers and I, like... ah, this one! [He plucks a falling memory petal out of the air and turns to show it to Red. It seems to be a glimpse of the three of them showing off--I mean, welcoming a challenger to their gym. Does Red think this would be a good reference to use?]
[ Woah, he's so into it...! Well, he's definitely got the man on a mission vibe, given that Red only really has to stand and wait and watch until a petal of fine tastes--as Cilan might like to phrase it--is put into his hands.
And it's--amazing, really, Red watching it play and being a little speechless for what it is. For one, why are they posing for, two, they're all dressed like fancy waiters... and is this the first time he's seen Cilan's brothers, too? ]
What's going on in this? Do you remember?
[ Let's just ask about that first one though, definitely intrigued. ]
This is how the three of us tend to greet people that come to see us--we want our gym to be a bold and unique flavor that sets us apart from any other gym, offering our challengers an amazing experience that they'll never be able to forget!
[And here, as the memory starts over and begins playing back again... Cilan seems to recognize where exactly this particular memory was pulled from, as he now reciting the lines said at that time along with the memory.]
"If a battle is what you desire, then your wish shall be granted!" [That was his line, as he then begins to speak along to Chili's--] "So you were a challenger! In that case, we'll be sure to greet you passionately! Like scorching fire!"
[And then, to Cress--] "No, no, I think we should attend to him coolly, like ice water."
[And then back to himself.] "In other words, this is the Striaton Gym!"
"And we--"
"As triplets--"
[And now, something that the three of them are shown saying at the same time.]
"Are the Gym Leaders! It's Showtime~!"
[And here, he even strikes the same pose as he did in the memory, sparkles galore in addition to the spotlight effect he seems to be sporting now.]
[...And then the sparkles and such disappear as he returns to a slightly more normal tone again.]
If I recall correctly, I believe this particular memory is from the day I met Ash and Iris, when the former came to challenge our gym. That was what we had greeted him with when he insisted on battling us rather than being waited upon in the dining area first...
[Has he mentioned to Red yet that his gym is also a restaurant?]
Red almost wants to clap after all that, though there's really no room to do that (both in his hands and when Cilan resumes speaking), but his shoulders shake with a small chuckle that he can't help let out, the whole re-enactment odd but too, too Cilan for Red to think anything bad about it. ]
Heh, Your gym's part of your house? That's a first.
Yes, as a matter of fact it is! The first floor of the building is our restaurant and the gym, and then Chili, Cress, and I reside on the second floor above them.
[It's a very fancy place to live in, wouldn't you agree?]
That's right! [...Oh, wait--] Did I not tell you about it before? My brothers and I have our own restaurant that we work at in the front of the building, and then the gym is located towards the back. As a result, we often get many customers that come for the food sticking around to watch any gym battles that occur that day.
[Hence the waiter outfits they were wearing in that memory. (Or even Cilan's own wardrobe of constantly wearing suits a lot even outside of the restaurant.)]
[ It's half-muttered, and it actually sounds more than just cool, but that is definitely not what Red was imagining just a second ago.
--but this hadn't been about admiring Cilan's strange gym design but instead about the trio in his hands, Red remembering with a shake of his head that leads him to look down for a second. Right, right. ]
You know, I think this should do, [ and he holds up the memory, a brighter smile following up, ] but if you wanted to show me more, I bet the artist wouldn't say no to more samples of the people she'll be painting!
[ Does Cilan want to talk more about his brothers.
Oh, sure! I don't mind showing you more of them...
[He catches another petal--this one shows glimpses the actual gym battle itself that he mentioned having with Ash. Apparently, it seems that Ash wanted to fight all three of them rather than just picking one of them to earn his gym badge, thus making it a best two out of three battle. Chili first with Pansear (who loses), and Cress with Panpour next (who wins). However, the memory stops before it actually gets to Cilan's part in that battle as he closes his hand around the petal now as he talks.]
As you can see, my brother Chili--he's the one who uses Pansear--has quite a fiery personality, while Cress, who uses Panpour, is the calmer one out of the three of us. [That said...] Still, even though the three of us have such different personalities, we do our best to work hard and encourage one another so that our individual flavors compliment one another, and thus can be blended together to create a recipe for success!
The three of you are so close! I've never seen a family like you guys before! [ The Oak family was cool, but this was on a different level. ] Are they as passionate about being expert at everything like you too? It has to get intense in the kitchen if you guys go head to head in cooking!
[ Three Cilan-like connoisseurs with different personalities competing against each other?? Sell tickets to that. ]
[Ah, well...] I'm the only one out of the three of us who chose to pursue a career as a Pokemon Connoisseur, but the two of them certainly have their own things that they're passionate about as well.
...However, I will say that it does get pretty competitive when we're working together in the kitchen sometimes. Chili in particular likes to insist that we should turn the heat up to make things more exciting, even against better judgement occasionally...
[But thank goodness Chili eased up on that over the years, otherwise there would have been so many more kitchen fires to attend to...]
Yes, thankfully. [Ahaha] But, I can't say that I completely disagree with him, in that it does make things more interesting. And like I said before, that fieriness is part of Chili's inherent flavor, so I think it's only natural that he would want to do things that way. And then there's Cress, who I would say is more meticulous and likes to take his time with it... but that's also a good thing too, especially when it comes to his presentation of a particular dish or two.
So, even when we do compete with one another, it's always fun getting to taste and compare each other's work afterwards.
[It's almost a shame they aren't here with us: he'd be curious to see if the taste of their food would change at all thanks to how emotions can affect one's cooking sometimes.]
[ It's what Red thinks--that it's a shame they're not here, his gaze going down to their faces on the surface of the petal and their presence in Cilan's words. It must be a little sad too to think about. Would a picture really be a happy reminder? ... ]
A picture's never gonna compare to memories like that... but I hope you think about all the good times like that with them when you see it!
[ Are we turning like a trainer on a mission--yes we are. ]
Let's go and leave these at the framers right now! We can pick a frame at the same time, then it'll be ready even quicker!
[ Of course, the boy isn't about to run off and leave Cilan behind, looking and waiting for him to come. We're gonna do this, this is going to be the best picture with the best memories, Cilan can pick whatever he likes for a frame and Red will get a day to come back in for a quote. ]
